Greta & Manu Schnetzler have had a longstanding interest in night photography as reflected in the variety of subject matter and places depicted in their work. They see their night work as a good example of the continuing desire to explore our environment, to see common sights in a different way and to capture images that reveal the mystery of the everyday. They are struck by the transformative power of night lighting (whether moonlight or artificial) to create beauty and feeling in urban settings.
They have an attraction to what has been left behind to be destroyed, to decay, or just to wait to be reanimated by human presence. Although their work is not documentary, they see their urban landscape transforming so quickly that they often feel a sense of urgency to photograph the scenes that they are drawn to before they fall to the steady march of progress. |

Silvia Poloto is a Brazilian–born artist who immigrated to the United States in the early nineties. She came to California to pursue a career as an engineer, but fell in love with art-making when she took courses in metal-working at City College shortly after arriving. She has been a full-time artist now for over 20 years.
Silvia has worked in sculpture, photography and video, in addition to painting. And all of these make their way into her artistic process. With photography and sculpture, the idea usually comes first. These are what she calls “thinking pieces”. She has a vision and she sets out to realize the vision in the work. However, she pointed out that “there is a space of not thinking, even in the thinking pieces”. With painting, it is more overtly “not thinking.” Her goal is to allow her sub-conscious to direct the pieces. Her current mixed media work showing in the Spotlight Gallery at Arc focuses on recent abstract studies in blue.
