“VICES” National Juried Exhibition
IN-PERSON OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, November 20th, 6-9PM

“Vices are simply the errors which a man makes in his search after his own happiness.” - Lysander Spooner

We are all just bundles of vices, collections of actions that aren't necessarily good for us, that have the potential to hurt our bodies or minds, our relationships, our financial or work prospects; things that feel good in the moment, but are maybe not so good for our futures.

JUROR: Philip Bewley, Philip Bewley Art Advisory, San Francisco, CA

“Vices” Juror’s Statement:

A quote by Lysander Spooner provided a description for the exhibition, Vices, at Arc Gallery, “Vices are simply the errors which a man makes in his search after his own happiness.” The artists presented in this exhibition have taken this idea and ran with it, subverted it, turned it inside out, upside down, and blown it up. With visceral, often lurid polychrome imagery, the works of art on view get inside and depict what we describe as vices: lust and kink, consumerism, the American obsession with guns and violence, alcohol and drug use, and a lot of cigarettes. While some of these vices can lead to a hell of personal degradation, as a juror I was struck by the giddy wit of the works of art presented. Either through the technical virtuosity in the depiction, or as an unapologetic personal account, Vices is a euphoric journey into desire, and what some may call perversion and depravity.

In Dyke's Real Mayo, one of a set of three digitally created collage pieces, the artist, a self-proclaimed lesbian feminist, states that she revels in the cultural sin by displaying herself as a sexual object, fulfilling her own hedonistic vices of processed food, cigarettes, ranch dressing, and the fantasy of older men. In another work on view, Money Shot, an undergarment is fabricated from actual U.S. currency. In this fully functional work of art there is the classic duality of sex and money, and I could see this setting a record at auction - another take on consumerism. In Self Satisfied/Pleasure Gloves 1, the artist repurposes vintage gloves and adds hand stitched textures for the purpose of sexual self-satisfaction. The artist challenges notions of the virtuous, ideal woman with these subversive stitches.
