JUROR'S STATEMENT: Flora & Fauna is a timely themed exhibition in an era of uncertainty about the future of our planet. The extraordinary value nature gives us over and over despite ignorant or sometimes selfish abuse of it by human beings. Several artists shared that concern and it was obvious to me with one look at the artwork. For other artists Flora & Fauna was an opportunity to demonstrate their appreciation for the beauty that abounds in the natural world. It made for a nice balance between the love of all things living and fear for their demise.
I always love good painting with depth and a sense of mystery and am equally excited when I see artists incorporating content into materials based work whether cut paper, printmaking, sculpture, photography or mixed media. I observed varied artist interpretations of nature from the very literal to completely abstract. In some cases it was an artist’s statement that convinced me.
The idea of Flora & Fauna clearly struck a chord with many and received more than usual submissions. There were so many excellent choices and making the selection of artwork was a bit challenging but at the same time rewarding. I appreciate the opportunity to have juried this exhibition.
