Fusion is the binding of two or more things into something new that possesses properties of both, incorporating different styles, ideas and designs. In a world where boundaries don't exist and technology provides the ability to connect globally, we can create collaborations and build connections that were impossible in the past. Through creative energy, the fusion of ideas can create new forms, blending cultures, colors, ideas, shapes, designs and intent. Fusion can be the melding of art and science, the conscious and unconscious, the tangible and intangible.

JUROR: Olivia Ongpin of Luna Rienne Gallery, San Francisco, CA
Juror's Statement: We received numerous submissions offering multifarious interpretations of the concept of Fusion, encompassing many different subject matters, mediums, and styles. Some approached the theme literally, while others found relevance in their current body of work. After all, art is inherently a creative expression of the ever-expanding world around us. The pieces that resonate most strongly with me are the ones that elegantly, uniquely integrate the artist's revelations in culture and technology/technique with his or her own sense of convention. The result is an image of instinctual beauty that, upon further investigation, reveals a melding of opposing concepts.
Olivia Ongpin is the co-founder of Fabric8 and Luna Rienne Gallery, a San Francisco-based gallery that has worked with hundreds of independent artists and designers since its inception as an online business in 1995. Now located in the Mission District, Luna Rienne Gallery features visual artists working in contemporary media who integrate elements of urban culture with traditional techniques, as well as a constantly-rotating collection of small, affordable works.
