“Pencil & Paint” Bay Area Exhibition
The Role of Drawing to the Creative Process in the Work of 6 Bay Area Artists - in the Project Gallery at Arc OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, May 13th 7-9PM, 2023 "The act of drawing is what locates, suggests, discovers. At times it seems enough to draw, without the distractions of color and mass. Yet it is an old ambition to make drawing and painting one." - Philip Guston Featured Artists: Pam Jue, Susan R. Kirshenbaum, Ezra Mara, Pamela Mooney, Stephen Namara, & Tom White EXHIBITION DATES: May 13, 2023 - June 10, 2023 |
- curated by Pamela Mooney
The “Pencil and Paint” exhibition explores the question “What is drawing?” Traditionally, drawing was thought of as a preparatory stage in the creative process. Sketches and renderings were a way to work out ideas or practice technique. It was mostly done with dry medium such as graphite or charcoal on a paper surface. Today this definition of drawing has expanded. Drawings now include work done in a variety of styles and materials. Drawing can be incorporated into a finished work of art, or a drawing can be presented as an artwork in itself. The six bay area artists in this exhibit exemplify this new, expanded definition of drawing. While not all use pencil or paint, all show how drawing remains a compelling artistic practice.
