"Choice" National Juried Exhibition
“Choice” is a juried exhibition in support of women's reproductive rights in the United States. Sponsored by the Northern California Women's Caucus for Art (NCWCA), this exhibition commemorates the 40th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. It explores choices women make with their reproductive life, and how choice, or the lack thereof, has affected their lives. The juror is Catharine Clark, owner and director of Catharine Clark Gallery, San Francisco. Concurrently, the Project Gallery at Arc will exhibit an installation of letters from people who were touched by abortion.
Opening Reception: Thursday, December 12th, 2013, 6-9PM
Artist’s Talk and Panel Discussion: Tuesday, January 7th, 2014, 7–8:30PM
Closing Reception: Sunday, January 12th, 2014, 1–3PM
At a time when the erosion of women’s reproductive rights is causing women in some parts of the country to feel that Roe vs Wade is a distant history, women artists from all across the nation interpreted and created artwork to the theme, Choice. They give us insight to their artwork through their writings about Choice. While one might think Choice is just about abortion, the artists and juror Catharine Clark show us that Choice encompasses the spectrum of reproductive rights: if and when to be a mother, method of contraception and termination of pregnancy. It is about celebrating a wanted pregnancy and weeping over a pregnancy wanted and not fulfilled. It is choosing to terminate a pregnancy without regret or feeling conflicted with loss wishing circumstances were different. The artists tell us Choice is what each woman must have the right to decide for herself.
Juror Catharine Clark, owner and Director of Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco writes, “...choice is an exceedingly complex topic, I think it merits a thoughtful voice. Artists whose work is approaching the topic with the depth and complexity the subject demands was chosen for the exhibit”
