DESCRIPTION:
“The brightest flame casts the darkest shadow.” - George R.R. Martin

In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, shadows reflected on the cave wall represent the illusion of reality, as opposed to the vision of true objects under light. Shadows can also represent secrets, deceit, uncertainty, and dark magic. Monsters, ghosts, beasts, and scuttling insects often lurk in the shadows and frighten us. Killers, kidnapers, and prowlers do their work in the shadows. Shadows can also be a refuge, for those who need to conceal themselves from public scrutiny or from enemies.

Our vision is obscured in the darkness of shadows, and we are never sure what happens there.
In ‘the light of day’, someone might be giving you one piece of information. But in the shadows behind your back, they’re sharing a more sinister truth. Lies happen in public, while truths lurk in the shadows.

Artists use shadows to contrast dark and light in imagery, and artworks that cast a shadow on a gallery wall provide their own form of magic. Show us your depiction of this illusory subject. We welcome wide interpretations of the theme of “Shadows.”
