Paper
National Juried Exhibition
“I wish I could just project everything on the paper.”
Patti Smith
With Paper, artists were invited to submit works that explore the creative potential of this ancient and timeless material. Whether used as a surface, substrate or sculptural element, paper must be a central component of each piece. The exhibition includes a wide range of techniques—drawing, painting, printing, folding, sculpting, collaging, sewing, binding, and beyond. Paper challenges the artists and viewers to rethink the boundaries of paper. How far can it be pushed, transformed, or reimagined? At what point does paper cease to be paper?
Exhibition: June 20 – July 18, 2026

JUROR'S STATEMENT
Donna Seager, Donna Seager Fine Arts & Artists' Books, San Rafael, CA
I love paper – folded, painted, printed or dyed, it has a purity and durability that is an inviting material for art. In this exhibition, I was particulary drawn to works where paper was manipulated in ways that showed that the paper itself was an essential medium in the execution of the artwork.
I was also interested in representing the various types of paper – smooth papers that lend themselves beautifully to fine detail and textured papers that are good for wet media like watercolor. Special attention was paid to works that involved handmade papers where so many natural elements can be pulped and applied. And then there is collage which is interesting in terms of paper because the artist can combine old and weathered paper imagery with contemporary themes and let the edges of the paper become an aesthetic element of its own.
I loved jurying this exhibition because it reminded me that the reverence I have for books had its genesis in paper. It’s printable surface and smooth elegant flatness invites creativity of all kinds, both visually and as a surface for the printed word. I am grateful for the opportunity and hope that you will find the exhibition interesting.
